To continue, I request to have ‘red gloves’ on the boxing Wallaby and ‘stars’ somewhere in the artwork. During those days the Australian Flag was a contentious issue.

Perhaps important supporters of the Rugby team, the Wallabies are witnesses?

Perhaps a flag was flown at Wallabies games during the 1990’s?

I know the purchaser of the generous gift and creator of the unique Bonds was a great fan of Australian Rugby Union. He was also the Doctor for the players at the time.

It was my friend, Dr Smethills idea that I design the artwork for a Bond. The conceptual design was discussed over the phone.

I decided we would design the artwork together, incorporating football.

As mentioned previously, Dr Smethills was also the Australian Rugby Union Doctor.

A Doctor for the Wallabies.

I thought that it would be a good idea to use this as a theme for the Bond.

It was also on my mind that the Australian Flag was not popular at the time. I said make the Bond look like a Flag in the following ways:

1. A ¹ Boxing Wallaby with Red Boxing Gloves.
   • Read more below under the Green and Gold Kangaroo picture below.
2. Stars somewhere in the artwork.
   • Similar to the Stars on the Australian Flag.
3. An Australian theme.
   • An Australian Building or Icon.
4. I also said the put my name somewhere on the Bond.
5. I selected a very popular Australian Artist known as Ken Done to design the Artwork.

I did not see the finished artwork for long. It was temporarily hung on the wall of Dr Smethills Practice in a picture frame. As mentioned in other Posts, a witness was required in the exchange of the Bond. I believe Ken Done was there, however the exchange never occurred.

Unfortunately, when I saw the Artwork on the Wall at an awkward angle I was a little disappointed as it look very ‘washed out’. The colouring was Pastel, a light washed out colour. A colour theme popular in the 1980’s. I now understand that Money is also Coloured in a similar manner and this made sense to the Artist Ken Done.

Unfortunately, the Bond was left on the Wall to be delivered with other Bonds at a later date and was later Stolen.

Introduction to the Crime

Below is Australia’s Boxing Kangaroo. This is the flag used for National Teams in sporting events. Look for it in the Olympics.

1. In the design of the artwork for the Bond, a Wallaby was the obvious choice. In Australia the cousin to the Wallaby is the Kangaroo. A well-known Kangaroo is the ‘Boxing Kangaroo’. I had recently been in a fight just after my 21st Birthday. Boxing Gloves were given to me by a close friend. Golden Gloves with Red Writing. After a bit of a discussion, it was decided that a yellow Boxing Kangaroo with Red Gloves might look good in the artwork. Dr Smethills took notes for Artist Ken Done to work off, a ‘scope of works’. Following a brief phone discussion with Ken Done, in the end, I believe it is possible that this idea of a Wallaby with the Red Gloves may not have been used by Artist Ken Done. He did not like Boxing. It was his choice to exclude the Boxing Gloves from the artwork of the Bond. ↩︎
